BackgroundAs part of the East London Community Band (ELCB) progamme, a small group of players meets weekly from 5.30-6.30pm on Friday evenings to play Renaissance and early Baroque music. At present the ensemble has five recorder players (two soprano, two alto, one tenor), three string players (one violinist, two cellists) and, on occasion, a trombonist. Aged from 12 to 70+, with varying experience and technical skills, the group is united in its love and enthusiasm for music of this period. Whilst operating as a self-directed chamber ensemble, the group does receive professional advice and support from the ELCB’s Music Director |
Our GoalWe now want to share this experience with a wider group of similarly interested musicians and to extend both the programme and and the range of instruments in order to explore more fully this rich and exciting repertoire. To take this forward we will be appointing a music director who shares our passion for early music, helping the ensemble to perform in as historically informed way as possible without any requirement, for example, to use gut strings, period instruments or tune to anything other than 440. Once established the orchestra will contribute to the ELCB’s expanding programme of public concerts in support of charities and local community initiatives |
How it will work
The orchestra will follow on from the existing early music chamber ensemble, meeting weekly on Friday evenings from 6.45 until 8.45pm at the ELCB’s base in the Shadwell Centre. London E1. We envisage the fee will be in the region of £90 for a twelve week term. Depending on initial interest we will start in September this year or in January 2018.
